Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large Granny Smith or Fuji apples
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes
- Cooking spray or light olive oil
Instructions
- Wash the apples thoroughly. Core and slice into 1/4-inch thick strips, leaving the skin on or peeling as desired.
- In a shallow bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Beat the egg in another bowl. Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third bowl.
- Dip each apple strip in the beaten egg, then coat in the flour mixture, and finally roll in the breadcrumbs. For extra crunch, re-dip in egg and breadcrumbs if desired.
- Lightly spray or brush the coated apple fries with oil to enhance crispiness.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the apple fries in a single layer inside the basket, avoiding overlap. Cook for 8-10 minutes, shaking halfway through until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately with toppings like caramel sauce, powdered sugar, or a side of vanilla ice cream for added indulgence.
Notes
- For gluten-free options, substitute all-purpose flour and breadcrumbs with almond flour and gluten-free panko.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness.
- Peeling the apples is optional; keeping the skin on adds texture and nutrients.
