  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4-6 servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or your favorite)
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and thinly slice the potatoes. Chop the onion and mince the garlic.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent, then add garlic and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the ground beef, season with salt, pepper, and paprika, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  4. In a greased baking dish, layer sliced potatoes, then top with some of the cooked ground beef mixture. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a potato layer.
  5. Pour milk or cream evenly over the layered casserole. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, or until potatoes are tender.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley, serve hot, and enjoy your hearty Hobo casserole!

Notes

  • Use russet or Yukon Gold potatoes for best flavor and texture.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner variation.
  • For extra flavor, add diced bell peppers or mushrooms to the ground beef mixture.
  • Store leftovers in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in the oven or microwave until steaming hot for best results.
