Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Optional: chopped walnuts or pecans for added crunch
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Press about two-thirds of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a greased baking pan to form the crust.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture over the apples, pressing gently to create a crumbly topping. Add chopped nuts on top if desired.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and apples are tender. Cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
- Opt to add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to enhance crunch and flavor.
- Can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerated up to a week.
