  • Total Time: 55-60 minutes
  • Yield: 12 bars

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: chopped walnuts or pecans for added crunch

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss to coat evenly and set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Press about two-thirds of the crumb mixture into the bottom of a greased baking pan to form the crust.
  4. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture over the apples, pressing gently to create a crumbly topping. Add chopped nuts on top if desired.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and apples are tender. Cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

  • Opt to add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to enhance crunch and flavor.
  • Can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 days, or refrigerated up to a week.
  • Freeze individual bars for up to 3 months for longer storage.
  • Warm in microwave or oven before serving for a fresh-baked feel.
